WestJet 787 Dreamliner now operating five-times weekly between Vancouver and Toronto

Canada-based WestJet and Vancouver International Airport announced Monday the airline's newest aircraft, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, is now operating five-times weekly between Vancouver and Toronto. Vancouver joins Calgary and Toronto as another domestic destination served by the airline's award-winning aircraft.

"We are proud our signature aircraft is now flying non-stop service between two of Canada's major cities and two of our hub airports,” said John Weatherill, WestJet Vice-President Network Planning and Revenue.

WestJet is also operating Boeing 737 aircraft on three other non-stop daily flights between Vancouver and Toronto for a total of four daily flights, with the exception of Saturdays. On Nov. 5, the WestJet Dreamliner increases operations between Vancouver and Toronto to daily service.

The WestJet Dreamliner features 320 seats in three cabins: Business, Premium and Economy.

Boeing plans 737 MAX aircraft return to service in mid-2020

The Boeing Company informed customers and suppliers on Tuesday that they are currently estimating the ungrounding of the 737 MAX will begin during mid-2020.

“As we have emphasized, the Federal Aviation Administration and other global regulators will determine when the 737 MAX returns to service,” Boeing said in a statement. “We are informing our customers and suppliers that we are currently estimating that the ungrounding of the 737 MAX will begin during mid-2020. We acknowledge and regret the continued difficulties that the grounding of the 737 MAX has presented to our customers, our regulators, our suppliers, and the flying public.”

Following Boeing's announcement, Canadian-based airline WestJet announced it will be updating its schedule to remove the 737 MAX aircraft through to June 24. WestJet has completed more than 98 percent of its planned departures even while its 13 MAX aircraft remain on the ground.

The 737 Max was grounded after the crashes of two jets – a Lion Air flight in October 2018 and an Ethiopian Airlines flight last March.

WestJet seasonal flight service between Charlottetown and Calgary

WestJet is bridging new domestic connections between the east and the west with the introduction of new non-stop seasonal service between Charlottetown, P.E.I., and Calgary beginning June 25.

WestJet's seasonal service between Charlottetown Airport (YYG) and Calgary International Airport (YYC) will operate four-times weekly on WestJet's 737 aircraft. Flights are timed for convenient connectivity from WestJet's largest hub in Calgary to destinations across Western Canada including Vancouver, Edmonton, Kelowna and Victoria. The seasonal flights conclude Sept. 7.

WestJet has served Prince Edward Island and the city of Charlottetown since 2005 and flights have more than doubled since introducing service. This summer, the airline will offer more than 67,000 seats to YYG, an increase of more than 20,000 from last year and in peak season will operate up to 20 flights per week from Charlottetown to Toronto and Calgary.

By June, from Calgary, WestJet's hub and home, the airline will operate more than 1,000 flights per week in peak season to 57 destinations out of Calgary International Airport.

"With record levels of tourism to the island, and a recent investment of $8.1 million into the Charlottetown Airport by the federal government, we understand the importance of increasing capacity for travel,” said Minister Lawrence MacAulay, member of Parliament for Cardigan, in a WestJet press release.

First scheduled transatlantic flight for WestJet

WestJet marks a key milestone in its 18-year history Sunday night with the launch of its first scheduled transatlantic service between Toronto and Dublin, Ireland, with a brief stop in St. John's, Newfoundland. The flight arrives in Dublin tomorrow at 7 a.m. local time.

Announced in November 2013, WestJet offered introductory fares between Toronto and Dublin starting from $199 on all flights in both directions from June 15 to Oct. 5 - fares which sold out within the first 24 hours. Today, the service is heavily booked and well ahead of projections, recently prompting a three-week extension to Oct. 25.

WestJet offer scheduled service to more than 85 destinations in North America, Central America, the Caribbean and Europe. Through their regional airline, WestJet Encore, the airline offers more than 120 destinations in more than 20 countries.
