Pratt & Whitney gets F-35 spare parts contract

United Technologies Corp., Pratt & Whitney, Military Engines in East Hartford, Conn., is being awarded $249 million to a previously awarded contract to procure low-rate initial production (LRIP) Lot 9 propulsion system initial spares for the global spares pool to include initial spare engines, initial spare modules, and initial spare parts required in support of the LRIP Lot 9 F-135 propulsion systems for the F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter aircraft.

The work will be performed in East Hartford (93 percent); Indianapolis, Ind. (6 percent); and Bristol, United Kingdom (1 percent). The contract is expected to be completed in July 2018.

The Naval Air Systems Command, Patuxent River, Md., arranged the contract award.

UTC explores spinoff for Sikorsky Aircraft business

United Technologies Corp. (UTC) announced Wednesday that its Board of Directors has authorized a review of strategic alternatives for the corporation's Sikorsky Aircraft business, including a potential tax-free spinoff.

"We are exploring strategic options for Sikorsky to determine the best way to enhance its long-term success and create improved long-term value for UTC's customers and shareholders," said UTC President & Chief Executive Officer Gregory Hayes. 

Sikorsky is a world leader in the design, manufacture and service of military and commercial helicopter platforms.

"Looking to the future, we are evaluating whether Sikorsky's unique business as a rotorcraft OEM with a predominately military customer base is best positioned as a stand-alone company, and whether a separation would allow United Technologies to better focus on providing high-technology systems and services to the aerospace and building industries,” Hayes said.

UTC expects to conclude its strategic review before the end of the year. However, no specific timetable has been set, and there can be no assurance that a spinoff or any other transaction will take place. Likewise, no decision has been made on the timing or terms of any such transaction if one were to occur.

Gitlin named president of Aircraft Systems at United Technologies

United Technologies Corp. (UTC) announced Thursday that David Gitlin has been named president of the Aircraft Systems business segment of UTC Aerospace Systems, effective immediately and reporting to Alain Bellemare, president and CEO, UTC Propulsion & Aerospace Systems. Gitlin succeeds Curtis Reusser who is leaving to pursue his career outside of UTC.

Gitlin has served as senior vice president of Aircraft Systems since the launch of UTC Aerospace Systems.

Gitlin, 44, has been with UTC since 1997, holding leadership positions in legal, business development, program management and customer service. Before the acquisition of Goodrich, he served as president, Aerospace Customers & Business Development, at Hamilton Sundstrand, where he oversaw aerospace customer service and support, business development activities, strategic partnerships, and mergers & acquisitions.
