Precious metals market estimated to witness substantial growth in coming years

The global precious metals market is complex and its value is dependent on various global and local economic variables. Precious metals are rare in nature and possess unique characteristics such as high conductivity, corrosion resistance, and catalytic capabilities, which make them suitable for various industrial applications. The four major precious metals - gold, silver, platinum, and palladium are also used for investment purposes. According to Grand View Research, the global precious metals market is estimated to witness a substantial growth in coming years. The stable Indian bullion market and stronger global growth are also expected to drive demand for gold jewelry in coming years. On top of that, increasing industrial demand for sliver, specifically from solar energy, is expected to boost the market growth. In the meantime, palladium is widely used for industrial purposes and its demand is directly proportional to growth of automobiles and electronics. Other industrial applications of precious metals include nuclear energy, photography, cutlery, antibiotics, computer parts, oil refining, space travel vehicles, bushings, and decorative.

Earlier in 2019, palladium had become the most valuable of the four major precious metals, with an acute shortage driving prices to a new record. According to Bloomberg, the metal is a key component in pollution-control devices for cars and trucks, and the metal's price doubled in little more than a year, making it more expensive than gold. Then, earlier this week, palladium prices broke records once again; This Wednesday, March palladium futures jumped 8.1 percent on the day, trading at approximately $2,504 an ounce. The increase is influenced by the supply-demand outlook, which continued to boost prices to new highs. Spot prices hit record highs of $2,590 an ounce earlier in the session. "At the start of the year, we were looking for upside risk for the palladium market, but prices have rallied further than we thought they would. Given how tight the market is, it is likely that we are going to continue to see further upside risk," Standard Chartered precious metals analyst Suki Cooper told Kitco News.

ASX and Spirit AeroSystems aim to create all-electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft

Airspace Experience Technologies (ASX), an aviation technology start-up, and Spirit AeroSystems, a global aircraft design and manufacturing company, have signed a memorandum of understanding and a definitive agreement to cooperate on creation of an affordable, certified all-electric, vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.

"Our partnership with Spirit aims to deliver simple, safe and robust electric VTOL aircraft that are accessible to the mass traveling public,” said Jon Rimanelli, CEO and co-founder of ASX.

The path to delivering low-cost aircraft systems starts with engineering services, then parts fabrication, and finally system integration supporting the launch of ASX's all-electric eVTOL aircraft, the MOBi-One.

NASA selects SpaceX to launch ocean research satellite

NASA has selected SpaceX of Hawthorne, Calif., to provide launch services for the agency’s PACE mission. PACE stands for Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem.

The PACE mission represents the nation’s next great investment in understanding and protecting our home planet. The mission will provide global ocean color, cloud, and aerosol data that will provide unprecedented insights into oceanographic and atmospheric responses to Earth’s changing climate. PACE will help scientists investigate the diversity of organisms fueling marine food webs and the U.S. economy, and deliver advanced data products to reduce uncertainties in global climate models and improve our interdisciplinary understanding of the Earth system.

The total cost for NASA to launch PACE is approximately $80.4 million, which includes the launch service and other mission related costs. The PACE mission currently is targeted to launch in December 2022 on a Falcon 9 Full Thrust rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

The PACE mission is managed at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

Temporary flight restriction planned for rocket launch from Virginia

Drone operators are being urged to exercise caution if using their aircraft to view the Antares rocket launch and avoid flying over the public and NASA Wallops Flight Facility property in Virginia on Sunday.

Drones, also called unmanned aerial systems, should stay clear of Wallops Flight Facility, the marsh areas between Wallops Island and the mainland and the Atlantic Ocean east of Wallops Island. A Temporary Flight Restriction and other Special Use Airspace will be activated by the Federal Aviation Administration.  Fines and penalties are applicable and will be enforced, NASA said in a notice posted on their website.

“There will be several thousand people in the area viewing the launch,” the agency said. “Public safety is paramount and drones should not be flown over crowds. The Wallops Range is committed to making sure that the viewing public is safe and that drones do not pose a threat to the success and safety of launch operations.”

The Northrop Grumman Antares rocket will launch at 5:39 p.m. EST from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport at NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility.

The launch may be visible, weather permitting, to residents throughout the mid-Atlantic region and possibly the East Coast of the United States.

This will be Northrop Grumman’s 13th commercial resupply services mission to deliver NASA science investigations, supplies and equipment to the International Space Station.
